They've become quite the fans.

As I've previously mentioned David and I are watching Star Trek: The Original Series. But what I didn't say is that shortly after we grownups began watching the show Paige and Emma became interested in it as well. At first Paige didn't understand that Spock's name wasn't "Spark" as she thought. And both girls ask a lot of questions which highlight how little they actually understand of what is going on. "What is Spock's last name?" "Well, what's his first name?" "What is Kirk's name?" "Where are they?" You get the picture.

But despite those drawbacks we've all enjoyed watching the show as a family. The girls like it so much that Saturday morning P&E decided they were going to play "Star Trek". Paige was Spock and Emma was Kirk. Paige had me put blue eye shadow on her lids, both girls wore the correct colored shirts, and they made phasers out of pipe cleaners. They also added their own shirt emblems. I thought they did a great job.

Here are their "models":
And now for the girls' representations:

I told them to make serious faces. ☺ Emma had an actual Star Trek pin on her shirt (it belonged to David in his youth), but Paige had to get creative with hers. A Pontiac emblem substitutes nicely, don't you think?

8 year-old milestone

Paige has been asking me for a few years now if she could get her ears pierced. I told her that when she turned 8 she could do it. I wanted getting her ears pierced to be kind of a special milestone in her life. (Why I picked age 8 I don't know.) Now when Paige's birthday came around she and I had both forgotten about my promise for her to get her ears pierced. Paige reminded me a week later, and I told her we'd do it soon. Well Monday night we went to nearby Mankato to shop at the large mall, and while we were there we saw a jewelry shop with a sign in the window advertising free ear piercing. Daddy said "yes", so Paige got her ears pierced! She didn't cry or seem nervous, but I held her hands just in case. Her eyes got very wide after the first ear was done. After the piercing was complete the clerk gave Paige a bag with cleaning solution inside, and the bag said "just got my ears pierced". Paige carried that bag around happily with the words out so all could see. It was an exciting and special night for her. ☺

Paige's birthday 6-6-10

For Paige's 8th birthday she had a swimming party. She and 6 friends + Emma went to our local indoor pool and frolicked in the shallow end and the hot tub. My nephew and I braved the slides. It was very fun! After swimming we came back to our house to have cake and open gifts. I always let the girls choose the cake decor, and Paige choose a cake with a fake ipod on it. ☺ Paigey received lots of crafts for her birthday, and she has been steadily creating ever since. She also was given several chapter books, and I've been overjoyed to find her curled up in the living room reading at odd times during the day. I so hope she and Emma are bookworms like me. ☺

For some reason this gave me a good laugh...

I think it was because she took the time to write it out using a stencil. ☺

Paige was published in Highlights!

Several months ago Paige had me submit a joke to the Highlights magazine. We were both bummed when they didn't print our joke right away. I figured that if they didn't print it initially upon submission then it wouldn't be printed at all. I was wrong! Yesterday Paige received a special envelope in the mail. Inside were two copies of the recent issue of Highlights, and included was a note that said she had been published. Exciting! Her joke was "What did the frog order for lunch?" If you don't know the answer scroll down to below the picture.

Answer: French flies and a large croak! ☺

Piano funny

Today Paige had a piano lesson with Miss Ana. Ana was helping Paige with her dynamics and tempo of Paige's arpeggios. Ana cleverly was using animal analogies to aid Paige in understanding how loud and fast she should be playing. When Ana asked Paige what her favorite animal was, I expected Paige to answer with something like a cat or a dog. She said a penguin. ... A penguin! I had to try really hard to not laugh out loud at that.

Paige's Poem

In Penmanship class today Paige had to practice writing a poem. This inspired her to want to write one herself. So here is her poem that she made "for the whole world".

I love God
Because He's special,
And even more
I should love Him.

Paigey Pie

Tonight I was sitting in the living room, using the laptop, when Paige came into the room. She had been outside playing with friends, and she must have also been visiting Daddy in the garage because she said to me matter-of-factly, "Mom, Daddy told me that he brought me into this world." Then she left the room, and as she was walking away she yelled, "...and he said he can take me out of it!"

I busted a gut laughing so hard, and when I could finally control myself enough to talk I said, "Actually, I brought you into this world."

"I KNOW!" she said. "That's what I told him!"

A conversation with Paige

The girls and I were on our way to water flowers at Luke's grave when the following conversation occurred:

Paige asked me, "Why do we have to go water flowers?"
"Because it hasn't rained in awhile." I replied.
"Yes it has. I remember."
"No, it hasn't...well, okay it rained the other day, but not enough. It only rained a little." I said.
She retorted, "Yes, it did. It rained a lot. It rained 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 days in a row!"
"When did it do that?!" I quickly asked.
"The other day. You don't remember. You have a bad memory. I have a great memory. I have the best memory in the entire world. I have a better memory than Daddy even. I was grounded one day, and he let me go outside. And I was still grounded though, and I remembered that I was grounded, but I didn't tell him because I didn't want him to remember so I could go outside."

Outsmarted once again by a 7 year-old. ☺
